Hey Everybody!
Thanks for checking out "Time Out with Todd!" I have been in Tartu, Estonia for about 2 months now and am playing for Tartu Rock Basketball Team! (
Tartu Rock
) I am so excited about the opportunity to play here and am also excited to keep in touch with you back home!
You are probably wondering... "Where is Estonia??" Well, it is an Eastern European country which is right next to Russia and directly above Latvia (the country I played in last year). It is also below Finland, so you can imagine how cold it gets in the Winter! It's all good though.... getting to play basketball as a profession is so much fun! One of the attractive things about playing for my team is that we play in 3 different leagues. We play in the Estonian League, the Baltic League (made up of the best teams in Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia), and the Eurochallenge (teams scattered throughout Europe). This is great because I will get the opportunity to play against high-level competition and travel all over Europe. I will keep you posted as to how our team is doing and the many lessons I am learning here!
One thing I've learned in these first 2 months is the importance of being multi-dimensional as a basketball player. Many times you hear of players being one-dimensional which means they can only do one thing well! I have played point guard pretty much my whole life and am most comfortable on the court with the ball in my hands. Well, a few of my teammates are injured and my coach needs me to play some shooting guard. This has definitely been an adjustment for me, but I am working every day to become better as a shooting guard. When you are on a basketball team (or any team for that matter), you have to be willing to take on different roles to make your team better.
I want to encourage all of you to be ready to make changes in your game for the good of the team. What does this look like? It means finding weaknesses in your game and working to improve them. Do you prefer someone else dribbling the ball down the court? Do you hate shooting free throws during the game? Can you consistently make a left-handed layup? These are all things that you can improve on every day! You never know when your team will need you to do things that you're not the most comfortable with. So start today and work on your game!
